Why do I do this?
And by “this,” I mean write these blog posts. To be honest, I do it because marketing is my life. It’s an ever-changing, fast-paced world and, if you don’t keep up, you will absolutely get left behind. Sharing what I know not only helps me stay sharp but gives me the chance to possibly help others along the way.
It’s nice to share. In fact, if you want, you can share too. Starting a blog is pretty easy. If you feel stuck and aren’t quite sure where to begin, maybe you can try here:
Start with a spark and let it become your hook.
Do not become intimidated by a blank page. Catch one idea, the thought that will not leave you alone, and write it in a single messy sentence. Then write like you are journaling. Tangents welcome. From that spark, pull your first two lines for the hook. Keep it curious, not performative.
For example: Instead of “Sunscreen is important,” I might use “The cheapest anti-aging routine on earth is the boring bottle you forget to reapply SPF.” It’s the same truth, just a clearer picture.
Write to your audience, not the entire internet.
You already know who you want to read your posts. Picture that person on their phone or laptop eager to hear what you have to say and write to them the way I am writing to YOU right now. It’s direct yet still friendly and I’m able to share what I want to share with you which is marketing!
Draft fast, sort later.
Caps, brackets, half thoughts, get the clay on the table. Leave notes for yourself and keep it moving. If structure helps, think in three quick beats as you go: the problem you felt, the insight that unlocked it, and how you can tie it all together in the end. What you type can always be corrected but not everything you think of may stay in your head so it’s better to get it all out and edit later.
Add some receipts.
Even though the writing is coming from you, don’t be afraid to sprinkle in some quotes or ideas from other people. Just make sure to cite them appropriately. It’s never cool to take credit for other people’s words.
Polish and package.
We’ve all been there where we have been forced to read those long seeming to never ending paragraphs. If you wouldn’t want to read that what makes you think someone else would. That’s why you should make your blog easy to skim. Short paragraphs and clear subheads that read like signs is usually the way to go.
Close with a punch.
Whatever you write should land with purpose. Decide if you want your reader to keep thinking or to stand with you, then finish with one clear line or one simple next step so they feel their time reading was worth it.
TRY THIS NOW: Open a blank doc and write your spark line, the thought that will not shut up. Give yourself ten minutes to riF. Highlight one sentence that feels like the heart of it and bold it. That is your takeaway. Make a couple edits towards the end (because everyone makes typos) and hit publish when you feel like you got everything oF your chest. That’s all it takes!
